Athos cruises and companion stays
The east side of Chalkidiki should not be reduced to one permit question. For many trips, the real planning problem is what happens when part of the group enters Mount Athos and the rest of the stay is built around Ouranoupoli, Ammouliani or a monastery-view cruise. The right move is to plan this side as its own complete stay, not as a spare corner of the peninsula.
Use sightseeing cruises as the non-pilgrim reading of the Athos side
For women, families and non-pilgrim travelers, the Athos side works best through the sea-view experience rather than through entry logic. A cruise gives shape to the day, keeps the monasteries legible from the water and lets the east-side stay feel intentional rather than excluded from the main story.
Ouranoupoli is the cleanest default base when the group splits
If some travelers are entering Mount Athos and others are not, Ouranoupoli is usually the strongest shared base. It keeps the permit and boarding side practical for pilgrims while giving companions a town, harbor rhythm and cruise access that stand on their own.
Ammouliani turns the companion stay into a real east-side trip
The eastern leg becomes much stronger when a non-pilgrim stay is built around both Ouranoupoli and Ammouliani. That combination prevents the outside stay from feeling like waiting time and turns it into a quieter island-and-harbor version of Chalkidiki.
Do not force the Athos cruise into a broad cross-peninsula plan
Cruise viewing and east-side logistics work best when the stay is already committed to this leg. They are weaker when treated as a heroic add-on from Kassandra or a loose extra after several other long driving days.
Separate the cruise day from the permit-entry morning
If the trip includes both pilgrims and companions, the easiest structure is usually to avoid stacking everything onto one brittle morning. The cleaner plan is to let entry-day logistics stay focused and use another day for a slower sea-view or island rhythm.
